LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR THE PEOPLE'S PROTESTS
15th October 2011
We, the participants of the conference „Critique and Humanist Socialism“, taking place on the island of Korčula, Croatia, from the 13th to the 15th October 2011, would like to express our support for the people's protests which are being organised today (15th October 2011) the world over, and especially the protests taking place in numerous cities and towns throughout the former Yugoslav region.
This conference, organised by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, is dedicated to the investigation and rethinking of both the tradition and current positioning of „Praxis Philosophy“, which refers to both the journal „Praxis“ and the „Korčula Summer School“. They were recognised, during the 1960s and 1970s, as sites of worldwide relevance in which discussions about key problems concerning the contemporary situation took place, as well as about the possible alternatives to capitalism and the problems of so-called real existing socialism, with an emphasis on understanding both the theoretical foundations and practical accomplishment of an anti-dogmatic, humanistic marxism and socialism.
The themes considered a few decades earlier at the „Korčula Summer School“ and on the pages of the journal „Praxis“ are not passé. The systematic violence of capitalism has assumed new forms, but in essence has remained the same. Capitalism drives against freedom, equality and solidarity between all people and prevents the building of humane interpersonal and social relations and a better world. This renders capitalism inacceptable and requires action both at local and global levels.
We consider the protests which are taking place today the world over an expression of the growing dissatisfaction of the masses and an expression of the increasing readiness with which many people are articulating that dissatisfaction and demonstrating it publically. In the words of Rosa Luxemburg: „The most revolutionary act is a clear view of the world as it really is“. With this in mind, we welcome the voices that are expressing today, on the 15th October 2011, how things currently stand and who are seeking to change the present state of affairs, and we hope that this marks the beginning of the formation of a wide front of resistance aimed at the ruling system.
