28 January – 1 April 2012
Amalia Pica & Karsten Fődinger

The exhibitions by Amalia Pica (*1978) and Karsten Fődinger (*1978) are another example of how Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen aims to stimulate the dialogue between two widely different artistic positions. This exhibition model, which builds on contrasts, is intended to generate new and fruitful conclusions for artists and public. Whereas Karsten Fődinger from Germany works with spectacular architectonic, almost brutal interventions in space, Argentinean artist Amalia Pica brings together poetry and political content in a very sensitive way. Both thus point towards the notion of structures in the physical and the abstract senses as well as the problems associated with them, whether they be of an institutional or of socio-political nature.

21 April – 1 July 2012
Haroon Mirza

Using high-end stereo systems from second-hand shops, coloured LED light chains, water hoses from DIY stores and fragments of film documents from popular culture, Haroon Mirza (*1977) creates installations which produce musical compositions in space. The English artist of Pakistani origin uses various types of devices and materials as instruments in a surprising way, allows them to interact and thus generate electrostatic sounds. The resulting soundscapes range between analogue tinkering and electronic music and bring together rhythm with a dash of humour. He likes to integrate artistic quotes in his projects and is simultaneously working on redefining the concept of sculpture. Mirza – who was awarded the Silver Lion at the 2011 Venice Biennale for the best work by a promising young artist – will create site-specific works for Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and with his Swiss premiere he will be presenting his largest solo exhibition so far.

21 July – 23 September 2012
Petrit Halilaj

Petrit Halilaj (*1986) does not shy away from using his personal biography as a source for his work. The Kosovan artist's childhood memories, centred on the drama of war and the subsequent refugee tragedy, are the motor for the creation of complex and often monumental installations. For those affected the search for an understanding of home is still a significant theme today. This is influenced both by world history as well as a personal definition of one's own identity. Halilaj uses simple materials such as earth and wooden slats but also live chickens and found archives from vanished museums in Kosovo to illustrate this permanent quest. Despite his relative youth Halilaj's exhibitions are precisely conceived narrations that know how to move an audience. We are pleased to be realising a new project by Halilaj at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen in which the Kosovan community living in Switzerland will also play a role.

6 October – 2 December 2012
Sylvia Sleigh

The artist Sylvia Sleigh (1916-2010), originally from Wales, spent most of her life in New York, where she attempted to redefine the canon of painting by questioning and reinterpreting pictorial conventions from a feminist perspective. Naked men, other artists and nature are the protagonists in her paintings which are characterised by strong colours and a love of decorative details. It is unusual for Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen to present a retrospective of a dead artist, but Sleigh's work is particularly interesting for the contemporary discourse and a younger generation of art lovers. The Sylvia Sleigh retrospective is organised in cooperation with Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo and CAPC, Bordeaux.

15 December 2012 – 24 February 2013
Heimspiel – Ostschweizer Kunstschaffen 2012

The juried exhibition «Heimspiel» (home match) which takes place every three years has become an important platform for the creation of regional art within the cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, the Principality of Liechtenstein and this time again Vorarlberg and receives much attention beyond the region's borders. Also in 2012 two heterogeneous exhibitions at the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen and the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen will reflect the region's contemporary art scene.

The Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen is supported by St. Gallen City Council, Kulturfőrderung Kanton St.Gallen, Swisslos, Migros-Kulturprozent, Martel AG, St. Galler Tagblatt. The educational programme is made possible by Raiffeisen.
